New Columbus Chief of Police to address graduates Summer Quarter

The first female Chief for the Columbus Division of Police, Kim Jacobs, will deliver the commencement address to the Summer Quarter class of 2012 on Friday, August 17, at 10 a.m. in Veterans Memorial. More than 700 students have petitioned to earn their degrees this final quarter at Columbus State.
Chief Jacobs entered the Columbus Division of Police in October, 1979. This was only four years after the Division first started training women to work in Patrol. She was the first woman in the Division to be promoted to Commander in 1995, to Deputy Chief in 2009, and to Chief of Police in 2012.
Throughout her career, Chief Jacobs has been actively involved in numerous projects to improve operations and as an instructor at the Division’s Academy for numerous supervisor development, in-service and recruit classes. Among those accomplishments are her work in helping to set up and start the Division’s Citizen Police Academy, the creation of a fifth radio talk group to reduce congestion on the radio, the creation of a separate Domestic Violence report when the new law went into effect, the complete reorganization of Internal Affairs to investigate all citizen complaints, implementing hands-on drivers training during in-service training for the first time, serving as host for President Obama when he appeared at the graduation ceremony for the 114th recruit class and in 2009-2010, putting together a new staffing and redistricting plan which included adding a new precinct.
Chief Jacobs holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from The Ohio State University and was a 4-year letter winner for the OSU Women’s Track team. She is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) and the Certified Law Enforcement Executive program (CLEE). Chief Jacobs serves on the Franklin University Public Safety Management Program Advisory Board, as a member of the Coalition Against Family Violence Legal Task Force, and is a member of the United Way Women’s Leadership Council.

Plagenz helps coordinate youth summit for new Americans

Florence “Flo” Plagenz, coordinator in the ESL Afterschool Communities program, was a Youth Collaborative board member for the 2nd Annual Call to Action Youth Summit titled "Empowering New American Youth to Take Action for the Future." The event was held Saturday, July 14, at The Columbus Police Academy. Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services and Asian American Community Services organized the event.
Three-hundred participants enjoyed a day-long event featuring six workshops geared toward teens, including one given by Wedgewood Afterschool Communities students entitled "Healthy Choices," which focused on nutrition and fitness. Plagenz secured several items to be raffled off at the summit including two complete desktop computers (donated by Cougar Geeks), six bicycles (donated by Franklinton Cycle Works), and six bike helmets (donated by Columbus Public Health).

Cougar Rewards to end but opportunities to save continue
As of August 17, the Cougar Rewards program will end in an effort to offer equitable discounts to all Bookstore customers. The Bookstore has been developing new, fun promotions for students, faculty, and staff—and with these enhanced promotions the Cougar Rewards program is no longer necessary. If you have an existing Cougar Rewards Certificate for $5.00, you will need to use it by September 28.

Upward Bound Program completes successful Summer Enrichment Institute
The students in the Upward Bound Summer Enrichment Institute get ready for New York City!
The Upward Bound program hosted a record-breaking 45 students this summer at its Summer Enrichment Institute. The six-week college preparatory program in the summer provides students from Columbus City Schools with at least 18 hours of instruction in core classes including mathematics, science, English, and foreign language. In addition, the program offers several exploratory classes as well as physical education and standardized test preparatory classes that supplement the core classes and provide students with a well-rounded academic experience. Students who maintain good grades and proper conduct during the six-week program are eligible to attend the end-of-summer educational trip. This summer, Upward Bound invited students to New York City to tour four colleges and to take in the sights and sounds of the city on a bustling four-day tour!
The program will start back in the fall with an Academic Year Kick-Off event on August 15.

Speech Rehearsal Lab changes name
The Communication Department has announced that at the beginning of Autumn Semester 2012, the name of the Speech Rehearsal Lab will change to the Communication Center. The name change reflects more closely the mission to help students connect with the world around them through better verbal and nonverbal communication, according to Communications Department Professor Christiana Hopkins.
Working within the framework of a professor’s assignment structure, tutors can help students brainstorm for appropriate ideas, organize effective presentations, develop and document the body of ideas, develop performance strategies, and deal with speech anxiety. Tutors coach students through the performance process by recording their rehearsals and watching the playbacks with them to help them see where and how to improve.
The Communication Center is located in 017 Nestor Hall. Students can make appointments online at http://tutorfile.com/speechlab. They will need to register on the site before making the appointments and they will also need access to their Columbus State student email accounts to confirm registration. Reminder: Deadline for Fee Waivers is August 15
The deadline for Employee/Dependent Fee Waivers for Autumn Semester is Wednesday, August 15. A Request for Fee Waiver form must be turned into Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. to guarantee that fee waivers will be processed before late fees are assessed.
