WE ARE IT

Event urges girls to try IT careers

Who is IT? They are.

“We Are IT” will bring about 225 high school girls to Columbus State to encourage them to go into careers in technology areas from programming to criminal investigation.

The event is intended to steer young women into the in-demand and high-paying fields of computers and information technology. It started after a statewide meeting of female IT professionals, and is now in its third year.

“Despite the pervasiveness of technology, women are still under-represented in information technology industries and careers,” says Mary Vaughn, chair of Columbus State’s Interactive Multimedia Department.  “We Are IT is a unique event designed for young women in middle and high school to introduce women early in their educational development to the broad range of opportunities that are open to them in information Technology.”

Breakout sessions include:

  • Alice in Wonderland, a tutorial on an educational software that teaches students computer programming in a 3-D environment.
  • Digital Photography Basics.
  • Move It! Creating Simple Animations using Flash
  • Phabulous Photoshop
  • Color Me Digital. Learn digital painting techniques with updated technology such as digital painting software or Wacom tablets.
  • Who Done It?: A presentation on crime detection techniques featuring experts from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation’s (BCI) Computer Crimes Unit.
  • Making Music. Use Apple’s popular GarageBand software to make music.

The event, for girls in ninth and tenth grades, will take place at 21 campuses around the state. It is a partnership between the Ohio IT Business Advisory Network and the Office of Career-Technical and Adult Education, Ohio Department of Education.
