JANUARY 21 – “February One” facilitated by Carl Bradwell.  Based largely on firsthand accounts and rare archival footage, the documentary film February One documents one volatile winter in Greensboro that not only challenged public accommodation customs and laws in North Carolina, but served as a blueprint for the wave of non-violent civil rights protests that swept across the South and the nation throughout the 1960's.

FEBRUARY 18 – “Ethnic Notions”.  Ethnic Notions is Marlon Riggs' Emmy-winning documentary that takes viewers on a disturbing voyage through American history, tracing for the first time the deep-rooted stereotypes which have fueled anti-black prejudice. Through these images we can begin to understand the evolution of racial consciousness in America.

MARCH 11 – “Barbie Nation”.  This film explores the generations of people obsessed with Barbie, the world’s most popular toy. Journeying from Barbie conventions to anti-Barbie demonstrations, from San Francisco’s gay pride parade to Croatia’s bunkers, Barbie Nation plumbs the phenomenon of the Barbie doll. Barbie fans, foes, fetishists—and the woman who created Barbie—reveal the history and fantasy behind this 20th century icon.

Screen N' Speaks

Beginning in 2008, the Diversity, Study Abroad and TRIO Programs Department will provide a new series called Screen n’ Speak. Each month, the department will work with Student Activities to show a topically diverse film for one week. At the end of the screening week, a final showing of the film will take place coupled with a discussion session led by a faculty or staff member of Columbus State.

All Screen n’ Speak films are carefully selected based on their inclusive subject matter in hopes that a rich dialogue can result from the viewing experience. The discussion sessions are geared toward increasing understanding of diversity and inclusion and providing a voice for the entire Columbus State community.

For more information on this event, please contact Kimberly Brazwell at x2426 or via email at kbrazwel@cscc.edu.
