Procedures for Using Real-Time Captioning

The Real-time stenographer will wait 15 minutes for a one hour class and 30 minutes for a class over one hour. The stenographer will leave the assignment, if the student has not shown up by this time.

If you know you will be absent from a class, please call the stenographer's office at 460-5000 to let them know you will be absent as soon as possible! If you will be absent for a weekend class, please arrange with the stenographer for a way for you to contact him/her.

The stenographer will not go to a class when the student plans to be absent.

The stenographer will provide you with a disk either at the end of class, with an e-mail cleaned-up transcript or with a hard copy cleaned-up transcript the next time the stenographer sees you. Cleaned-up transcripts are still considered rough drafts.

All transcripts are for the sole use of the person who is receiving the service. Transcripts should not be copied for other students in the class. If DDS learns that transcripts are being shared or sold the service may be terminated.

The stenographer will only provide real-time for what is spoken in the class, not notes written on the board or any other print material.

Please do not speak to the stenographer during the class while he/she is working. They must pay very close attention to what is being said so they can provide captioning as accurately as possible.

At time words may appear misspelled on the screen but your print transcript will be a corrected version.

Disability Services will provide the stenographer with copies of the textbooks for the courses you have so he/she can input vocabulary words into the equipment's dictionary.

Any requests for real-time or questions about this service, please see the Coordinator of Interpreting and Real Time Captioning Services, Franklin Hall 228.

The stenographer follows the same professional and ethical standards as a sign language interpreter and will remain in that role. He/she will not advise, tutor, proofread, etc.
