The
Columbus State Community College commissioned a new work for its Concert
Band. band Director Thomas Lloyd received a grant from the Columbus
State Development Foundation which paid for the music as well as for the
composer, Ian Corbett of Kansas City, to fly to Columbus for the
premiere.
"Charisma" was played on the band's May 25, 2005 concert at the King
Arts Complex Theater with the composer conducting. Corbett is
Assistant Professor of Music Technology and Audio Engineering at Kansas
City Kansas Community College and a former student of composer Chen Yi.
Of "Charisma" the composer writes: "The concept was to compose a piece
that would be enjoyable for both the band and the audience. The fusion
of traditional ideas of harmony, melody, and counterpoint, with chord
extensions borrowed from jazz create the style of the piece. Driving
rhythms and an overall increase in contrapuntal activity propel the
piece to its conclusion."
